Monument of the Fallen

The memorial stone for the killed soldiers of Poperinge was founded back in 1926. It was set up on the place of the strongly damaged café ‘à la maison de ville’, that was also used as town hall until 1781. The statue is a representation of a triumphing soldier who raises the flag of his native country. The representation of the soldier as a hero is intensified by two persons, a man and a women, who are placed on a lower base and who’re offering him a wreath. The names of the killed Belgian soldiers are placed on three of the surfaces of the monuments pedestal an alphabetical order.
